3 days before the trading deadline, Indians GM Mark Shapiro dealt Jhonny Peralta to the Detroit Tigers. In exchange the Indians get 19-year old LHP Giovanni Soto who has a 6-6 record with a 2.61 era at Class A. Soto has pitched 82.2 ip with only 25 walks and 76 strikeouts on the year. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native was named Gulf Coast Pitcher of the Year in 2009 leading the league in ERA.
Detroit has watched veterans Brandon Inge, Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen all go on the disabled list in the past week. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski was forced to go out and make a move because Detroit is only 4 games out of first place but, they were starting to fade fast. Its doubtful that Peralta will be a big difference maker for the Tigers but, this was a panic-type move for Detroit and hopefully the Indians found a gem in Soto.
