An already depleted Indians line-up suffered the most severe blow of the year last week when Shin-Soo Choo went down with a badly injured thumb. Choo will be lost for at least a month and if he has surgery then he could be done for the year.
Monday night in Texas Indians first baseman Matt LaPorta was involved in a collision when Elvis Andrus inadvertently landed an elbow to the back of his head. Initially LaPorta was laid out on the dirt motion-less. It appeared that he was out cold but, quickly opened his eyes and sat-up. It was quite clear that he was dazed and confused. Trainer Lonnie Soloff administered the standard concussion tests and finished by asking LaPorta if he knew where he was. The rookie quickly responded, "Yes, first base."
LaPorta finished the inning in the field and then was removed for precautionary reasons. He also sat out Tuesday night's game just to be safe.
I really like the way Jayson Nix has swung the bat since being claimed off waivers from Chicago. He also plays a tough second base and hangs in there at the bag to try and turn every potential force out into a double play. In a 4-game stretch Nix has gone 6-17 with 3 homeruns.
Jason Donald continues to impress me with his determination. He had a career-high 4-hit night in Texas and hit nearly .350 during a 15-game stretch. He has committed a ton of errors but, he never seems to take his defense to the plate with him. More importantly he continues to work before every game on his defense and while he will never win a gold glove he should be able to help this team either as an every day second baseman or utility man in the future.
